Histoires De Carres > Spring-Summer 2019
The mid 19th-century colour plate that inspired this scarf was found in a book conserved in the Emile Hermes collection entitled Le Bourrelier harnacheur ("The Saddler and Harness-Maker"). The harness links the horses to the beam - the long wooden bar fixed to the front of the horse-drawn carriages and used to steer the vehicle. The strict composition and almost imperceptible irregularities testify to the skilled hand that worked on these plates. With her precise and delicate style, Florence Manlik interprets the motifs, stitching eyelets, reflections and brilliance, laying out the different parts of the harness on silk.
