Washington’s Carriage Detail

A painting by J. Robert Hart inspired Caty Latham to design the Washington's Carriage scarf. The 1792 watercolour in the style of a carriage-maker's drawing represents a "Cross-section of George Washington's carriage, made in London". Three years earlier, in 1789, the first president of the United States boarded this coupe decorated with spread eagles and travelled from his New York residence to Federal Hall, where he gave his investiture speech. In this detail from the original composition, the eye concentrates on the arabesques of the design, on the axle and the movement of the wheel, the very image of an American setting its future in motion.
