FACING THE OPEN SEAS
The big vessels of Louis XIV paraded their fires of flashing gilt, in all their monarchic pride. But what launched the ships in their assault on the horizon, more than the glory of the Sun-King or the call of the ocean, was that heroic inclination of man to face the fury of the billows and song of the sirens. Let them rest in peace, those mariners of the deep, whose boldness is inscribed in the history of the sea! Their masculine and anonymous heroism splits the bow-waves of our memory with those figureheads which people the prows of ships.

Facing up to the high seas
The Sea, that indomitable monster, watery-scaled dragon, is always ready to rise up in protest. Only to be confronted by a ship, decked out for combat like a samurai. The vessels of the Sun King, in their gold, once propagated the power of the monarch, and one may well say of them that they "look" to the high seas, because the ocean gives nothing away. all navigation is a conquest and the wakes of ships trace their victory. But the vanquished is hardly such. As always the executioner is merely dozing.
