Byzantine Skies

These illuminations, with their sweet floral symmetry, give the spirit an impulse which transports it towards the heady heights of meditation and self-contemplation. They adorn the manuscripts of the holy texts, which were guarded by the monks among the treasures of their byzantine libraries, at Mount Athos, the island of Patmos - the Aegean retreat of the Apostle John - and that haven of erudition, the monastery of saint Catherine of Sanai.
