Joys of winter

The merit of winter, according to writer Andre Gide, is that it brings about a general cleansing; he praised winter's constancyin giving us, year after year, the esthetic benefit of reducing nature to its essentials. Winter also brings Parisians, every 25 years or so, the pleasure of an impromptu ice rink on the lake in the Bois de Boulogne. Not for a hockey match nor a demonstration of acrobatics, but rather a slightly slippery outing for everyone.
