Veils of light

The sericulturist, who breeds bombyx and supplies the great silk mills of Lyon, Tours, and Saint-Etienne, was not always up to the task. From the earliest times, European ships made for Asia, homeland of the mulberry-bush and leading producer of the precious thread. Whole fleets sank, entire caravans were lost, but men continued to set off down the "silk Road" regardless, responding to the call of a destiny as dazzling as the fabric itself.
