H Carre > Fall-Winter 2002
Nicea, the ancient town of Asia Minor, became one of the centres of the Ottoman Empire from 1333, celebrated for pottery workshops. The dish inspiring this tribute dates from about 1570, the heyday of a tradition of ceramics rekindled by the discovery of a silicon paste looking like porcelain. Kept in the Sadberk Hanim Museum in Istanbul, its decoration reminds us that tulips, brought to Europe in the 16th century, once grew wild in Turkey.
