Bartholdi's Fountain
Bartholdi (1834-1904), the Alsace sculptor, whose masterpiece, the renowned Liberty statue, dominates New York harbour, created this monument for the town of Bordeaux, although it was acquired in 1890 by the town of Lyon. Cascading water brings to mind the Horse, whose impetuosity has been harnessed by man, but it also stands for Woman, whose ardent vigour is impelled by the eternal torrents of Life itself.
