- The France, owned by the Compagnie Generale Transatlantique or French Line, is an iconic liner dear to the hearts of the French, which made its maiden voyage on 3 February 1962. She was the largest ship in the world at the time of her completion. Its end was announced on its 202nd voyage when President Giscard d'Estaing declared the end of subsidies in 1974.
