Hermes.com > The Story Behind
The almost hypnotic floral motifs of this illustration draw the eye into the meanders of the petals… This design evoking a garden is dedicated to the Maharani of Jaipur, born Princess Gayatri Devi of Cooch Behar, the third wife of Maharajah Sawai Man Singh II. Politically active, she marked the era with her crusade to give Indian women access to education. In the early 1940s she founded the school for girls that bears her name. Twenty years later she became a member of parliament, elected with a majority vote never before achieved. An outstandingly beautiful woman, she loved nature and gardens. Annie Faivre wished to “give her flowers” through this design, reinterpreted here in bandana style.
