"We are looking for hardy riders, preferably orphans, who will risk their lives once or twice a day", said the posters of the Pony Express, the postal system thayt linked Missouri to California from April 1860 to October 1861, the day the telegraph, which made the company obsolete, was put into service. Afterwards the job of the mailman became easier. It was only the recipient's patience that was sometimes put to the test.
