Year 1994 – Published by Hermes in partnership with Polytechnique for the celebration of the School’s Bicentenary.

  • Ecole Polytechnique, also known as “X”, is located in Palaiseau, not far from Paris. Its history began in 1794, when a group of scholars decided to organize a new Central School of Public Works. The militarization of the Ecole in 1804 by Napoleon I was a decisive turning point for Polytechnique. The history of this institution illustrates the industrialization of France and the creation of a Frewnch-style technocracy, a kind of “state nobility”. The sale of this scarf contributed to the financing of the Association, which aims to help particularly brilliant young people who are upset bt serios material difficulties.
  • Sold by the school Association / Printed 2,000 copies / Unique colour / 90 x 90 cm / 100% silk

Contemporary civilian costumes

They were "contemporary" for 1788, when they were presented in a four-volume work by Sylvain Marechal, illustrated with woodcuts of paintings by Desrais and Grasset de Saint-Sauveur, with accompanying footnotes on the "customs and religions" of the people who wore them. Today, these somewhat outdated clothes carry us back in time on an enchanting journey through forgotten lifestyles that is worthy of the fables of old.
