Carres d'Art > Carres Hermes Editions Speciales
Published and created especially by Hermes in tribute to the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.
- The Cooper Hewitt Museum was founded in 1896 by the three granddaughters of Peter Cooper, an American industrialist, inventor and philanthropist. The museum, located in New York, Manhattan, was free when it opened to the public in 1897 and housed the Cooper-Hewitt collections of decorative and design objects. Faced with financial demands, the museum closed in 1963.
- Following public protests against the closure, an agreement was reached to reopen the museum in 1968. Thus the Cooper-Hewitt collections were welcomed by the Smithsonian Institution, which became the owner. Located in Washington DC, the Smithsonian Institution is the largest complex of museums and research centres in the world. In 1994, the museum was renamed Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. It has since changed its name again.
