Danse Pacifique

Hermes Histoires de Carres > Autumn - Winter 2021

Headresses adorned with coloured feathers are carefully arranged around shells typical of the Pacific Ocean, such as the cowrie shell, recognisable by its oval shape with serrated centre. Until the early 20th century, these shells were the main form of currency in the Pacific Islands and were often used in ceremonial jewellery. In this design, artist Laurence Bourthoumieux pays tribute to the culture in this part of the world, which is also renowned for its diverse landscapes, encompassing tropical forests, mountains and savanna.
