What a curious gallery of portraits! Figures from history and legend along with some incongruous faces pose in the studio of an unseen photographer. Marie-Antonette, the French fictional character Fantomas, and the god in a winged helmet are dazzled in turn by his flash. The American artist Daniel Clowes, creator of cartoon strips inspired by 1950s comics, has combined genres and eras in an entertaining composition evocative of the wild ambience of early 20th-century masked balls. "Who am i?", the beautiful woman in the centre seems to ask. With her impeccably styled hair and her gaze concealed behind a domino mask, she is the true heroine of this double-sided scarf.
