In Africa, more than elsewhere, rhythm determines everything. Whether in Zaire, Kenya, Nigeria or Gabon, the tautened skins of the drums, accompanied by harps, lyres, gongs and bells, resound from one village to another, recounting, from time immemorial, the song of the cricket and the flight of the birds, the course of the river and the turning of the seasons. It is like the beating of a heart, as mighty as this continent: its pulse bewitches us.
