Chevaux De Trait
Le Carre Hermes Paris >> Automne – Hiver 1993 / 94
Draught Horses
In the old days, horses ridden in battle were so strong that they could withstand the terrible crashes once painted by Uccello, which would break our modern mounts to bits. Later on, the descendants of those proud chargers were hitched to carriages, then to plows, and even to beer wagons. In their harnesses they dreamed of their long-lost glory. Here, two English shires, surrounded by percherons, other shires and clydesdales.

Shire Horses
With their massive stature and stalwart necks, here are the Percherons, the Clydesdales and the Shires parading in a ring, within a frame of martingales, or chest straps, adorned with the horse-brasses so beloved of English harness-makers. These heavy horses are the descendants of the battle chargers of olden times and if their valour in modern times has been confined to agricultural tasks, transport and commerce, their pride has yet remained in tact.
