Historias De Carres > Autumn-Winter 2011
A homage to the Ainu people of Japan, this scarf draws inspiration from the traditional patterns of its culture. The ceremonial costumes, large wrap-around tunics similar to kimonos, adorned with numerous decorations embroidered with braids or insignia, sometimes take a year to complete. Their structure, and their highly geometric composition somewhat resembles American quilts: two traditions separated by an ocean and yet still close. These harmonious lines and curves evoke a magic circle, a labyrinth whose heart is preserved … Woven with fibres of bark or nettle, the clothing embellished by these designs demonstrate the Esprit Ainou which is trying to survive.
