Historias De Carres > Autumn-Winter 2011

Crisp air, crunch of snow, the crystal clear sound of water, dogs panting, bears growling … Here, with heightened senses each moment becomes an eternity. Men live in close communion with nature whose beauty is surpassed only by its harshness, and animals are their companions, aides and resource. Clothed in sealskins, armed with harpoons, they hunt and fish in the vastness of this island of ice. Life could congeal as a flower freezes in snow, but instead it grows in vigour. It survives and is stronger for doing so. Does the scarcity of resources in this ‘land of men’ (Kalaallit Nunaat) make them wiser?

GREENLAND

A continent fixed at the extremities of the world, where ice prevails. Life there is shown up in sharp relief. On the frozen wastes anything that moves is an event. And in the arctic silence, voices resonate: the yapping of husky dogs, the growling of bears whose parlor is disturbing, the barking of seals who give man food and clothing. Soundless voices also of the stars, who rain down in their thousands on the ice floes and who, in the dark polar night, seem to be like a silent celebration of the human faculty of adaptation.

Le Carre Hermes > Automne-Hiver 1992/93

Greenland

Such regions are pure; nothing matters except the essential, to keep moving, and in this landscape of frozen sun, throughout the six0-month-long winters, color fights ceaselessly to escape the domination of whiteness. All this happens without commentary. In the silence, one can perceive the panting of the sled dogs, indispensable companions in these immensities worthy of the pens of Jack London and James Oliver Curwood.
