Winter Mailcoach
In the Nineteenth Century the Mailcoach (for post) and the Stagecoach (for travellers) offered London daily links with the provinces, punctual to within a quarter of an hour despite the worst weather. The central scene shows a departure for Brighton (4 1/2 hours away) captured by William Shayer, an artist specialising in the genre. The young Marquis of Worcester holds the reins, coach-driving being a favorite hobby for the sons of aristocratic families.
