Marche Flottant Du Lac Inle

Le Carre Hermes Paris >> Printemps - Ete 1998

The Floating Market of Lake Inle

Thirty minutes of motorised canoe through a real soup of seaweed and you reach this Burmese river bank, bordered with mountains, where every Wednesday the floating market is held. Coconuts, tomatoes, lentils and fish are bought and haggled over, here, in a wondrous calm scented with sandalwood. Only the cry of seagulls is to be heard and the laughter of children paddling in the company of a buffalo. We are in the village of Ywama, two hundred kilometres from the Golden Triangle.
