Published in collaboration with the Gacha Foundation

  • The Gacha Foundation of Cameroon has an important collection of Ndop fabrics, of great ornamental wealth. Ndop or Dze Ndouop is a traditional and ritual fabric from Cameroon, Central Africa. The Ndop fabrics of the Bamileke, inhabitants of the Cameroonian savannah, are made of cotton woven in narrow strips. The Bamileke women use raffia threads to apply the patterns that will be died in reserve with indigo. The making of these fabrics differs from country to country. The fabrics from Cameroon are mainly abstract designs, while those from Nigeria are characters or animal designs. Ndop fabrics are used in various rituals. This scarf released at the end of 2017 was exhibited at the Dak'art Biennale in June 2018.
