If ever there were a magic mountain, this is it; its mineral bulk, protecting the Nuba tribes of eastern Sudan, sometimes defended them against their attackers and often granted them their prayers to live in peace. Their abode, teeming with wonders, inhabited by wild beasts and strange birds, rustles with ghostly mutterings, where the canny ear may pick out, from amongst the voices of children and the crowing of a cock, the murmur of a promise.
