The monarch whom all the world called simply "The King" commanded an appropriately majestic dwelling - Versailles. Here Louis XIV and his progeny ruled resplendently for a hindred years, from the glittering 1680's to the dawn of the French Revolution. Kings enthroned in a gilded palace, parks peopled with statues of gods. The royal vegetable garden, designed by Jean de la Quintinie, is tended today by the National Horticyulture School.

The absolute monarch whose splendor dazzled the four corners of the earth needed a palace that would awe the world. It was Versailles, with its fairytale setting of box-hedges and fountains fit for the frolics of the gods of antiquity. Whispering droplets, rustling leaves murmur the Sun King's name. The voluptuous secrets of divine right are cherished forever in a parek to delight the democratic heart.
