Histoires De Carres > Spring-Summer 2019
In this construction of the mind, square follows square in a mise en abyme, and the eye is irresistibly drawn towards the centre. A rising trajectory reveals a distant landscape, sky and clouds, hovering on the edge of fantasy. Cassandre, a French artist of Ukrainian origin who was at once a painter, graphic designer and theatrical set designer, created numerous advertising posters in the 1930s. His pared-down approach is instantly recognisable: a stylised, almost abstract graphic signature, large flat tints of colour and a remarkable sense of composition. This design, a perfect illustration of his style, invites the viewer on a flight into space and a projection into the future, lending multiple meanings to the word "perspective".
