Hermes Histoires de Carres > Autumn - Winter 2021
In the centre of the design, framed by antique bridle bits, two interlaced Hs evoke the marriage of Emile Hermes and Julie Hollande in 1900. This monogram was inscribed on the doors of the store at 24 Faubourg Saint-Honore during major building work undertaken in 1924, and still to this day adorns the lift that was inaugurated at this time. Several decades latter, Richard Nixon, then President of the United States, became trapped in the lift to the dismay of the store staff and his own bodyguards. To immortalise this adventure, the lift was renamed after its illustrious prisoner. At Hermes, little anecdotes often lead to big stories.
