Hermes Historias De Carres > Autumn-Winter 2010
Decked out in full evening dress, plumes and diadems adorning their hair, elegant ladies cross the line of Republican Guards on the arms of their cavaliers. The crowd presses forward on the esplanade, the Opera is brilliantly lit up and above the Muses float the “tricolor” flags: Poetry, Music and Dance are the colours of the Republic. Cherubs support the lights, a woman steps down from her carriage, the men sport their ceremonial clothes, a musician hurries towards the artistes’ entry… With a light and alert brush, Jean-Louis Clerc sketches a humorous and lively portrait of fin de siecle Paris.
