Carres d’Art > Carres Hermes Editions Limitees
The Carre Tuiga is named after a racing yacht built in 1909 by the William Fife shipyard in Scotland. In 1994, after 30 years of immobilization, Prince Albert of Monaco, president of the Yacht Club of Monaco, decided to buy the yacht which was completely renovated.
Year 2006 – Published for the benefit of Orphanages of the World on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Tuiga and the inauguration of The spirit of Tuiga Club.
- Prince Albert created the Spirit of Tuiga Club to allow future generations to discover traditional sailing methods and techniques while respecting the environment on board this classic yacht. Press release from Orphanages of the World: “Tuiga”, the limited edition, has been sold … to support the tradition … the proceeds from the sale of the scarves have been donated to our association. We received 48,900 euros and were able to finance a year’s work with this one donation.
- Sold exclusively to the members of the Yacht Club of Monaco / Unique colour / 500 copies / 90 x 90 cm / silk twill
Personal Reflection
This scarf, designed by Dominik A. Jarlegant, was released as a limited edition by Hermès at a Black Tie Fundraising Gala for the International School of Monaco. This was in May of 2006. I was working at the school at the time as they were one of my good clients along the Cote d’Azur (but regrettably not invited to the evening affair). The main objective of the fundraising effort was to build several new classrooms for a sister school in Rwanda.
MC for the event was Roger Moore, aka James Bond. Joining him was honorary Co-Chairman, Prince Albert. At the end of the auction, the final item up for bid was a donated Mini Cooper actually signed by the Prince. The bidding ended with 100,000 Euro bidder, who took the microphone as he was handed the keys by Moore and Prince Albert. He then donated his prize back to the school and asked those in attendance to rebid the car for what it should be really going for. Bidding the second time closed at 250,000 Euros !!
Rather than building a few classrooms in Africa, IS Monaco was able to build 3 entire new schools for the 350,000 Euros. The patrons in attendance were provided this Hermes scarf.
Elements of Design Reflected in the Scarf
- Waves off the ship's bow
- Birds overhead
- Intriguing use of lines and rigging
- Sailing elements in the corners
- Contrasting hem
