Voltaire
Le Carre Hermes Paris >> Automne – Hiver 1994 / 95
In 1750, Voltaire set up residence in Potsdam near Frederick II, in the Chateau de San-Souci whose Versailles-like beauty was the inspiration for the border of this scarf. At first it was a perfect friendship between the king of Prussia and the esteemed Man of Letters, whose signatures adorn the center of this composition. It took only three years for the trouble to begin; this period no doubts marks the limit of time that an enlightened despot’s moods can tolerate the spirit of philosophy.
