Carres d’Art > Carres Hermes Editions Speciales
Published as a tribute to the voyage of Pytheas and to the city of Marseille which was awarded the distinction of European Capital of Culture in 2013.
- The European Capital of Culture is a city designated by the European Union for a period on one year during which a programme of cultural events is organized.
- The idea of the award was conceived in 1985 by the actress turned Greek Minister of Culture, Melina Mercouri, and Jack Lang, the French Minister of Culture. Six centuries before our era, the Phocaeans founded their first colony: Massalia, which was to become Marseille. It was in this city that the Greek Pytheas lived 200 years later. This adventurer was one of the first European explorers whose adventures have been preserved in fragments.
